Fastest VPNs of 2026: We Tested Download Speeds on 50 Servers — Here's the Data
Speed is the most common reason people cancel VPN subscriptions. A bad VPN can cut your download speed by 80%, making streaming, video calls, and gaming miserable. We tested 10 major VPNs on 50 servers across 6 continents using a 1 Gbps fiber connection as baseline.
Test Methodology
We ran each VPN for 7 days on each server location, testing at 3 times of day (morning, afternoon, peak evening). Base connection: 950 Mbps down / 920 Mbps up on a dedicated 1 Gbps fiber line. All tests used the VPN's fastest recommended protocol. Results averaged across 21 tests per server per VPN.
Speed Results (% of Base Speed Retained)

NordVPN unblocked all 4 but with occasional re-connection needed for iPlayer. Surfshark unblocked 3/4 reliably. Most other VPNs were inconsistent — streaming services aggressively block VPN IP ranges in 2026, making this a key differentiator.
