China's Great Firewall is the world's most sophisticated internet censorship system. It blocks Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, most Western news sites, and thousands of other services. VPNs are the primary tool for bypassing it — but China actively detects and blocks VPN protocols using Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). Most VPNs that work outside China are completely ineffective inside it.

Why Most VPNs Fail in China

China's DPI can identify VPN traffic by its signature — even when encrypted. Standard OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2 traffic has identifiable patterns. Effective China VPNs use obfuscation to disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS web browsing — making it invisible to DPI. Only a handful of providers have maintained working obfuscation against China's continuously evolving detection systems.

Critical: Install BEFORE You Enter China

VPN provider websites are blocked in China. You cannot download or sign up for a VPN from inside China. Install and test your VPN before you arrive. If you're already in China without a VPN: Shadowsocks-based tools, Tor bridges with obfs4, or contacts outside China who can set up a private server are the remaining options. The Tor Project's official Bridges service is accessible via email from inside China for this reason.

Technically, only government-approved VPNs are legal in China. Using an unauthorized VPN is illegal under Chinese law.
